Our new and improved Travel Model Version 2.0 is the coolest tDCS device we’ve ever built! We listened to your comments and feedback and included them in our design process. The main update in our new version is the addition of a small, blue, current-indicating LED light. You will never again need to worry about leaving your device on and draining the battery! When the device is switched on, the LED illuminates, informing you that the device is on and current is flowing. When you’re done with your tDCS session, just switch off the device and the LED will turn off as well.

Additionally, we programed additional functionality so that the LED light also functions as a low-battery indicator. As the internal 9V battery (not included) loses power over time, the internal circuitry tracks the available voltage to determine the battery’s health. When the battery reaches a low enough level to effect the performance of the device, the LED light will begin flashing, alerting the user that the battery needs to be replaced. This low-battery monitor and health indicator is a first in the tDCS industry. With this new functionality, you can be sure that your tDCS device is always performing at the highest standards possible.

Finally, we took the old Travel Model’s electrode cables and replaced them with a high quality, flexible, and more durable set of cables. The new electrode cable utilizes a much smaller, 2.5mm jack as opposed to the 3.5mm jack from the original Travel Model. Additionally, the white cable fuses the Anode and Cathode wires together, similar to the wires used with headphones. The fused cables have the ability to be pulled apart, so you can alter the cables to access those hard to reach electrode placements.

I got this kit a while ago because I had read about tDCS and really wanted to try it out for myself. I’m in my 3rd year of college, and I wanted to see if tDCS could help me retain more information, specifically interested in the “DARPA” montage, which I heard about on a Radio Lab podcast online.

I chose this basic kit because, being a college student, my wallet is as thin as a pancake. I found the setup to be a little DIY. However, the online instructions were very helpful and I eventually got the hang of connecting the alligator clips to the sponges (you need to insert one prong into the sponge to prevent it from touching your head). I know this is a “basic kit”, but I think it could be improved to at least include plugin electrodes.

The size alone makes this device a winer. It is small, and I mean small. It fits in the palm of your hand! I’ve seen other tDCS devices on the internet that literally look like a brick, so I’m guessing you’re have to sit in one place while stimulating… I love the fact that I can throw this thing in my pocket and go about my day. Sometimes I even forget I’m wearing it!

Downsides are definitely the alligator clips, and how they must be attached to the sponges. Additionally, you’re limited to just two current settings. Jumping from off to 1mA can be a little shocking (pun intended hehe) when you first turn it on. But after a few times it’s not that big of a deal.

A big thank you to The Brain Stimulator team for making an affordable tDCS device. The results alone make it well worth the money spent!
